I think it runs much deeper than sport, although being shallow the Aussies can't really discuss anything but sport.
They actually believe that the Australians invented Rugby (League) I spoke to many Aussies who genuinly think it's their sport ?
Why are Australians just not well informed ?

Australia is over-rated.

The UK still appears to dump many British migrants in Australia, they use the media to sell Australia to blinkered UK residents who seem to think they can inprove their sad existance by moving to Australia.

When they sell Australia they always show someone walking down a beach and talk about a relaxing life style, truth is working class people won't be able to afford to live anywhere near a beach and Australians arn't relaxed, many are insular and uptight and basically don't like the English and take every oportunity to let you know that you are just a Pommy B''''''''''

Working class Aussies tend to be ignorant and arrogant ( BIg Mouth Aussies)

Enjoy your life in the UK, Australia is now an expensive place to live, so don't mess your life up just take regular holidays in the med....Greece, Spain etc and get on with your life here in good old England.

There is a certain amount about A H-W in Paul Smith's 2007 memoir "Wasted?". Apparently he captained a side from West Rand managed by Ali Bacher who were "a fun loving bunch", featuring PS and Brian MacMillan, the future South African international. PS says -
